THE FINANCIAL MARKETS' typical "sell in May and go away" appears to have deferred until the beginning of June. By the numbers, for the two weeks ended Friday, June 6, 2008, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 12,210, down 269 points, or 2.2%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 1360, down 16 points, or 1.2%, and the NASDAQ Composite closed at 2474, up 30 points, or 1.2%.
Senator Obama appears to have secured the Democratic nomination in his quest for the White House. The U.S. unemployment rate rose to 5.5% in May, with comments by the Bureau of Labor Statistics that much of this increase was attributable to students seeking summer work.
